My good friend also has custody of his daughter. His ex-wife has had some problems with substance abuse and reckless driving, and she's been convicted of multiple DUIs. He didn't have to fight very hard to get custody of her. But he is worried that she would get custody of their daughter if anything happened to him. Do you think that her criminal record and visits to rehab would be enough to make sure her mother would be able to get custody, rather than her?

This situation sounds somewhat similar to what my sister is facing. So far, she's gone to court several times now just to get custody over her son. Because the process is going slow for her, she's thinking about maybe finding a way to speed up the divorce by studying the law of it.
